Liposuction by a Specialist Plastic Surgeon for Toowoomba & Gold Coast Patients

liposuction - liposculpture procedure - dr magnusson

Liposuction surgery will help you to achieve smooth and toned body contours, and remove undesirable areas of stubborn fat. In addition to improving your appearance, fat removal through liposuction can also benefit your overall health. For many patients across Toowoomba, Brisbane and the Gold coast, this procedure can enhance a commitment to a healthier, more active lifestyle. After achieving improved body contours, many patients become motivated to maintain results through a strict diet and exercise regimes.

Liposuction can also be used as a less invasive form of breast reduction surgery, helping women experience relief from back and neck pain caused by the weight of large breasts. With proper care, your results can last for many years to come.

The liposuction & liposculpture procedures

Liposuction is a surgical procedure used to remove focal accumulations of fat underneath the skin. The length of the procedure will vary based on the amount of fat that needs to be removed, the number of areas being treated and whether fat is being returned using fat grafting or liposculpture. The most frequently treated areas are the hips, outer thigh, inner thigh and flanks. This procedure is often combined with other operations such as lipofilling or liposculpture, which redistributes the unwanted fat to areas where additional volume may be beneficial, including the buttocks, breast or face.

Before pursuing liposuction, you will need to arrange a consultation with Associate Professor Magnusson. During your consultation, he will talk to you about:

  • Which liposuction options are suitable for you
  • Your skin type
  • The safety and effectiveness of surgical procedures
  • Your expectations and what can be achieved

liposuction information - dr mark magnusson

A/Prof Magnusson operates under general anaesthetic in an accredited surgical facility. Minor procedures can be undertaken under local anaesthetic in the operating theatre in his Toowoomba rooms.

Before the procedure begins, an anaesthesia will be administered. During the procedure, A/Prof Magnusson will use a technique called SAFE Lipo, which stands for separation, aspiration and fat equalisation liposuction. Once the anaesthesia has taken effect, a number of small incisions will be made around the treatment areas. A cannula will be used to separate the fat and introduce fluid containing local anaesthetic and adrenaline to reduce bruising and make the area more comfortable after the procedure. A/Prof Magnusson will then start the aspiration process and suction out the fat between the skin and muscle. This process results in a smoother, remodelled body shape. If liposculpture will also be used to transfer the fat to other areas such as the breasts or buttock, the excess fat will first be cleaned to remove blood and fluid before it’s injected back into the body.

Since this is a day procedure, patients will not need to spend time in hospital.

Undertaking cosmetic surgery (also known as aesthetic plastic surgery) is an intensely personal and private decision that can have very positive effects. Suitable candidates for liposuction & liposculpture

Liposuction is not a weight-loss tool. The body has its own balance and will return to the pre-treatment weight if there are no changes to lifestyle that would otherwise lead to weight loss. The stored fat will simply be redistributed to other areas. Suitable candidates already have a healthy lifestyle, stable body weight and are looking to remodel and recontour their body shape. Fat removed by liposuction can be discarded or added to other areas using liposculpture or lipofilling. This is particularly common in the breast, buttocks or face.

We all have different body shapes and we look more like our family members than our friends because we tend to accumulate fat in specific areas. Excess fat that cannot be removed through regular diet and exercise can be addressed using liposuction.

Having firm, elastic skin also plays a role in the success of the procedure. The more elastic your skin, the more likely your skin will shrink into place after liposuction, leaving you with smooth, natural-looking results.

A suitable candidate in Toowoomba, Brisbane or the Gold Coast should have realistic expectations about the results of this procedure, as well as the following qualities:

  • Average or moderately above-average weight
  • Concentrated fat pockets that do not respond to diet and exercise
  • Firm and elastic skin

frequently asked questions

How much does liposuction cost?

The final cost of liposuction is dependent on several variables, including the technique that’s used, how many areas are treated and whether or not liposculpture will be added to the procedure. If the procedure is performed at a hospital, this will also affect the final cost. The best to receive a more accurate quotation is to schedule a consultation with A/Prof Magnusson. Since this is a purely cosmetic procedure, patients won’t qualify for a Medicare rebate.

What can I expect during recovery?

Directly after your procedure, you will need a friend or family member to drive you home due to the effects of the general anaesthetic and pain medication. The treated area will be fitted with a compression garment, which will need to be worn for at least six weeks. This will reduce bruising and swelling and aid the healing process. Depending on what areas are treated, patients can return to work within a few days. In some cases, it will take up to two weeks to get back to your normal routine. While walking is fine, any strenuous forms of exercise will need to be avoided for at least a month. Pain, swelling and numbness are common after liposuction and liposculpture procedures but these effects will subside over several weeks. Patients should also be aware that if the excess fat was reinjected into another area, it will be swollen and appear larger at first. After the area has healed and some fat reabsorption has occurred, only then will the final results be visible.

Will there be scarring after liposuction?

There will be some scarring after liposuction and liposculpture but because the incisions are so small, scarring is almost invisible. There are steps that you can take during recovery to minimise scarring even further, including protecting scars from direct sunlight and using gel silicone strips.

Does skin elasticity affect liposuction results?

Yes, skin laxity does impact liposuction results. Skin that still has high levels of elasticity will look smoother and more natural following the procedure. Patients who have lost a significant amount of weight may need to pair liposuction with additional types of surgery that will get rid of excess loose skin, a tummy tuck being one example of this.

How should I prepare for procedure?

A/Prof Magnusson will provide you with detailed instructions on how you can prepare for your procedure. For one, you will need the assistance of a family member or friend the day of and after your procedure. You will also need to stop taking specific medications and supplements that could cause excess bruising and swelling prior to your liposuction surgery.

What are the risks and potential complications associated with this procedure?

Infection, fluid accumulation and contour irregularities are some of the potential risks associated with this procedure. Numbness is also a common occurrence but sensation does return in the treated areas over several months, so this is not a cause for concern. A/Prof Magnusson will take you through all of the potential and risks and complications during your consultation.

Can the removed fat come back after liposuction?

Liposuction is designed to completely remove unwanted fat cells, which means they won’t return to that area. However, any remaining cells in that area can still grow if a healthy lifestyle is not followed. Fat cells in other areas can also grow, which means additional liposuction treatments may be necessary.

Will liposuction reduce the appearance of cellulite?

While liposuction is not meant to be a treatment for cellulite, it can improve the appearance of the skin. When a large percentage of fat is eliminated from a specific area and lymphatic drainage is improved, cellulite will become less visible over time. However, areas that have severe cellulite will more than likely remain unchanged. Diet and exercise should also be considered if you want to reduce the appearance of cellulite over the long term.
