By removing stubborn fat, liposuction can help you achieve smooth and toned body contours and remove undesirable areas of stubborn fat. In addition to improving your appearance, fat removal through liposuction can also help provide benefits to your overall health. For many patients across Toowoomba, Brisbane and the Gold coast, this procedure can reflect a commitment to a healthier, more active lifestyle. After achieving improved body contours, many patients become motivated to help maintain results through strict diet and exercise regimes.
Liposuction can also be used as a less invasive form of breast reduction surgery, helping women alleviate back and neck pain caused by the weight of large breasts. With proper care, your results can last for many years to come.
The liposuction and liposculpture procedures
Liposuction is a surgical procedure used to remove focal accumulations of fat underneath the skin. The length of the procedure will vary with the amount of fat being removed, the number of areas being treated and whether fat is being returned as fat grafting or liposculpture. The best results are achieved when applied to areas of focal contour deformity or evenly in entire regions. The most frequently treated areas are the hip, outside thigh, inner thigh and flanks. This procedure is often combined with other operations, such as lipofilling or liposculpture, to redistribute the unwanted fat to areas where additional volume may be beneficial such as the buttocks, breast or face.
The initial step before having liposuction surgery is to arrange a consultation with Associate Professor Magnusson. During your consultation, he will talk to you about:
- Which liposuction options are suitable for you
- Your skin type
- The safety and effectiveness of surgical procedures
- Your expectations from the surgery
A/Prof Magnusson operates under general anaesthetic in an accredited surgical facility. For minor procedures this can be undertaken under local anaesthetic in the operating theatre in his Toowoomba rooms.
Before the procedure begins, you will be given anaesthesia. A/Prof Magnusson uses a technique called SAFELipo. This stands for separation, aspiration and fat equalisation liposuction. Initially while the fluid is injected a cannula is moved through the fat to start to separate the fat tissue, aspiration is then performed with a continuously mobile is administered using a suction device attached to a cannula (a narrow, stainless steel tube). Once the anaesthesia has taken effect, a number of small incisions will be made around the treatment areas. The cannula will be used to separate the fat and introduce fluid containing local anaesthetic and adrenaline to reduce bruising and make the area more comfortable after the procedure. A/Prof Magnusson will then start the aspiration from the target fatty areas between the skin and muscle, where it will remove the excess fat with either a large syringe or a suction pump. This process results in a smoother, remodelled body shape.
Am I suitable candidate for liposuction and liposculpture?
Liposuction is not a tool to remove or lose weight. The body has its own balance and will return to the pre-treatment weight if there are no changes to lifestyle that would otherwise lead to weight loss. The store fat will be simply redistributed to other areas. Suitable candidates already have a healthy lifestyle, stable body weight and we are looking at remodelling and recon touring the distribution of fat to improve the body shape. Fat removed by liposuction can be discarded or returned in the form of liposculpture or lipofilling. This is particularly common in the breast, buttocks or face.
We all have different body shapes and we look more like our family members then our friends because we tend to accumulate fat in specific areas according to our shape. Excess fat that cannot be removed through regular diet and exercise may be addressed by Liposuction.
Having firm, elastic skin also plays a role in the success of procedure. The more elastic your skin, the more likely your skin will shrink into place after liposuction and leave you with smooth, natural-looking results.
A suitable candidate in Toowoomba, Brisbane or the Gold Coast should have realistic expectations about the results of this procedure, as well as the following qualities:
- Average or moderately above-average weight
- Concentrated fat pockets that do not respond to diet and exercise
- Firm and elastic skin
Can this procedure be combined with another surgery?
If you have concerns about more than one body area, you may be able to treat multiple areas during the same operation. Some common procedure combinations include abdominoplasty with breast surgery, arm and breast surgery, and arm and thigh surgery.
However, there are a number of factors that influence whether it is safe to combine surgeries, such as
- Body Weight
- Medical conditions, i.e. diabetes, heart and lung problems, smoking
However, this is typically elective surgery and it is important that this is performed safely, as opposed to performing marathon procedures for the sake of efficiency. As every patient’s circumstances are unique, A/Prof Magnusson will discuss the possibility of combining procedures during your consultation.
