When considering undergoing surgery on the abdomen, you may be wondering whether abdominoplasty or liposuction is the more suitable option for you. While both procedures can address fat in the abdominal area, they are very different procedures, and choosing the right one will essentially depend on what you’re hoping to achieve.
Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and can also involve tightening the underlying abdominal muscles. Liposuction, on the other hand, is a fat removal technique that targets localised fat deposits through suction. The two surgeries are sometimes combined, but not always, and the decision to undergo either will depend on the structure of your body and what you want to address.
In this blog, we’ll explain how each procedure is performed and outline the differences between the two. We’ll also go over how to know which option may be more suited to your needs and expectations. If you want advice based on your personal needs, please get in touch with our team to discuss how to book a consultation with A/Prof Magnusson in either Gold Coast or Toowoomba.
What is an abdominoplasty, and how is it performed?
Abdominoplasty is a procedure that may be recommended when there is significant excess skin in the abdominal area. This is quite common after significant weight loss or after pregnancy, as the skin may not retract fully once the body changes shape. Sometimes, the abdominal muscles also become stretched or separated, which can lead to weakness in the core. Therefore, as well as removing excess skin and localised areas of fat, it can also include repairing the abdominal muscles, if needed.
The incision required to perform the procedure is typically made along the lower abdomen, extending from hip to hip, though the exact length will depend on how much skin needs to be removed. The remaining skin is then repositioned, and the navel may be adjusted. If muscle repair is part of the procedure, sutures will be used to bring the muscles back together, which can help to address the weakened core strength.
While this is generally how the procedure is performed, the exact steps will need to be planned and explained during your consultation, as every procedure is highly tailored to every patient’s individual needs.
What liposuction is and what the procedure involves
Liposuction is a fat removal procedure that can be performed on various parts of the body, including the abdomen, thighs, and flanks. Unlike abdominoplasty, it does not address excess skin or muscle separation, so it’s typically recommended for those who have good skin elasticity and are mainly looking to reduce localised fat deposits.
It’s important to note that, while liposuction is designed to remove areas of fat, it is not a weight loss procedure. In fact, the procedure can only remove a certain amount of fat at a time and is only designed to target specific areas.
During the procedure, small incisions are made in the target area, and a thin cannula is inserted to break up and suction out the fat. The technique used may vary, as some methods involve ultrasound or laser-assisted technology to help loosen the fat before removal. Since liposuction does not involve large incisions, scarring is usually minimal. However, the skin must have enough elasticity to contract after fat removal, otherwise, some level of excess skin may remain after the procedure.
When abdominoplasty may be the more suitable option
If you want to address excess skin on the abdomen, an abdominoplasty Gold Coast will usually be the more suitable option. This can especially be the case for those who have experienced significant weight loss or pregnancy, as skin that has stretched beyond a certain point will not typically be able to fully tighten on its own.
If the abdominal muscles have also weakened or separated, this can also require an abdominoplasty procedure to address. While surgery may not always be required to address separated muscles, it can help to address core stability and strength, which may help those who have experienced weakness in the area following bodily changes that can occur, particularly after pregnancy. Since the procedure involves an incision along the lower abdomen, scarring will be present, but this will usually fade over time.
When liposuction may be a more suitable choice
Liposuction is generally more suited to cases where patients only want to focus on areas of fat rather than loose skin. If the skin has enough elasticity to contract after fat is removed, then liposuction alone may be enough to achieve results that align with your personal expectations.
However, as we mentioned when discussing if abdominoplasty may be the more suitable procedure, it’s important to consider if you have experienced muscle separation or if you have excess skin that may not fully retract after the procedure.
During a consultation, A/Prof Magnusson can assess your abdomen and consider each of these factors. If you don’t have muscle separation, have good skin elasticity and only want to focus on areas of fat on the abdomen, abdominal liposuction may be a suitable choice. When it comes to undergoing abdominoplasty or liposuction, it will ultimately depend on your needs and what you want to address.
Can abdominoplasty and liposuction be combined?
Sometimes, patients may not necessarily need to decide between an abdominoplasty or liposuction, as the procedures may be able to be performed together.
If a patient is undergoing an abdominoplasty to address excess skin and possibly separated abdominal muscles as well, liposuction may also be included to address fat pockets.
The details of combining these surgical approaches will ultimately come down to your individual needs and expectations. A consultation will help to determine the right approach and plan the details of your procedure, so you will be able to discuss whether or not to combine both approaches.
